Aims:
- To explore the impact of psychological trauma on oral health and dental care.
- To understand Trauma Informed Principles
- To provide the practitioner with practical strategies for creating a safe and supportive environment for all patients.
Outcomes:
- Understand the impact of psychological trauma on oral health outcomes and treatment approaches.
- Employ effective communication strategies and trauma-informed principles to minimize anxiety in patients.
- Be able to establish trust with patients, creating a safe and positive dental experience.
Eileen Johnston Bio
Ms Eileen Johnston is a Dental Officer within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Public Dental Service who has a special interest in paediatric dentistry, dental anxiety, trauma informed care and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Eileen qualified from Glasgow University in 2004 and completed foundation training and MFDS in Edinburgh. She has worked for the Public Dental Service in Lothian and now Glasgow where she is currently the clinical lead for dental CBT. Eileen has completed a Diploma in CBT and more recently a Masters in Mental Health Practice from the University of West of Scotland. She has also completed the Scottish Trauma Informed Leaders Training (STILT). She has presented nationally on the topic of Trauma Informed Care and has been an invited speaker at both BASCD (2022) and for NHS Southwest England (2024).
Eileen is currently working alongside the Psychology Directorate of NHS Education for Scotland developing a Trauma Informed training programme for the Dental Workforce as outlined in the National Trauma Training Programme for Scotland.
