Aims:
Following this presentation delegates should understand the following:

  • The changing patterns in oral health amongst older adults
  • The challenges of preventing and managing caries in older adults
  • The options available for replacing missing natural teeth in older adults

  • Work with their patients to plan appropriate preventative regimes
  • Use evidence-based approaches to manage caries in partially dentate older adults
  • Consider the most appropriate tooth replacement options for older adults

Professor Gerry McKenna Bio

Professor Gerry McKenna is Chair of Oral Health Services Research and Gerodontology at Queen’s University Belfast. Gerry qualified at Newcastle University and after working in Edinburgh and Dundee, including time in dental practice, he completed his PhD and specialist clinical training in University College Cork. Gerry is also a specialist in Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry working as a Consultant in the Belfast NHS Health and Social Care Trust. His clinical duties are based in the Centre for Dentistry, Queens University Belfast where he provides teaching and clinical supervision for dental undergraduates and postgraduates. Gerry leads Oral Health Research within the Centre for Public Health where he also heads the Health Services Research and Global Health Research Group. His research is centred around optimising treatment options for older patients which positively impact their dental and overall health. Gerry is also Director of Internationalisation within the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences in Queen’s University Belfast.

Gerry is the current president of the BDA Northern Ireland Branch and has previously been President of the British Society of Gerodontology, European College of Gerodontology and the Geriatric Oral Research Group within the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). He holds a King James IV Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, an adjunct Professorship in University College Cork and is a visiting Professor in both the Federal University of Goais, Brazil and Zurich University, Switzerland.
