Aims:
To recognise the different presentations of TMD particularly in the context of the acute and chronic presentation
To understand the importance of different pain drivers where TMD related pain becomes persistent
To develop confidence in educating patients on TMD which supports self-management over clinician dominant management

Objectives:
Know the relevant factors to document in a TMD history & examination
Recognise why TMD pain may become persistent in some patients
Know which aspects of management a dentist should focus on in primary care
Understand which TMD patients should be managed in secondary care and how to refer

Dr Kevin Ryan Bio

Dr Kevin Ryan graduated from University College Cork in 2003 and has worked as a general dental practitioner at various points in his career in Cambridgeshire, Norwich, Cork & Waterford as well as a period for 18 months in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in Norwich.
He went on to gain a medical degree, also from University College Cork, in 2011 and subsequently trained in Oral Medicine in Sheffield. Having completed his training he took up a consultant post in Oral Medicine in Glasgow in 2016.
He has an interest in orofacial pain and is currently working through a masters in the clinical management of pain.
